The Emission Trade System, or ETS, is the European Commission's system to regulate and reduce carbon emissions. The eventual goal is to eradicate emissions completely by the year 2057. Under ETS, CO2 emitters are given the choice to actually reduce their emissions, or to compensate for their emissions.
