Demurrage & detentie

Demurrage vs. Detention: What’s the difference?

If you work in logistics and container shipping, you’ve probably come across these terms. But do you know exactly what they mean?

Demurrage: This fee is charged when a container stays too long at the terminal, covering the period it remains there, whether before loading for export or after arrival for import. 🕰️

Detention: This charge applies when a container is taken off the terminal and not returned within the allotted time, whether it's in use before being loaded for export or after delivery for import. 🚛

The purpose of both fees is to ensure containers are used efficiently and no delays occur.

💡 At Embassy Freight, we always strive to minimize demurrage and detention for our clients through proactive planning and clear guidance. Feel free to reach out—we’re here to help!
