Spring Thaw Canada 2026

Each year, restrictions apply to maximum loading weights during the “Spring Thaw” (thawing period) in Canada. Due to large amounts of meltwater, roads can be affected, which is why weight restrictions are enforced during this period. These restrictions may vary between 8% and 20% of the normal permitted load weight, depending on the axle type and vehicle configuration.

All shipments exceeding the weight limits and arriving or departing by truck after March 16, 2026, will be subject to a “Spring Thaw surcharge.”

The weight restrictions apply to all pre- and on-carriage by truck in the province of Quebec, including Montreal. Dates and restrictions may differ in other provinces.

In addition to maximum weights, the load must be evenly distributed across the truck’s axles. Responsibility for this lies entirely with the shipper. Any fines resulting from non-compliance will be charged to the shipper.
