Suez Canal back in focus: shorter transit times, but caution is advised

More and more shipping lines are gradually resuming services through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea on selected routes. For container transport between Asia and Europe in both directions, this could mean that shipping lines start using the shorter route again instead of the longer detour around the Cape of Good Hope.

Shorter transit times, but no return to normal yet

A route via the Suez Canal can significantly reduce transit times. However, for the time being, it is important not to assume that this will automatically be the case. Shipping lines decide on a route-by-route basis which route to use and adjust their sailing schedules according to the current security situation.

For importers and exporters, this means that the route chosen may differ depending on the vessel, shipping line and sailing. Changes may also occur at short notice.

Check your transport insurance

If your shipment is transported via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, we recommend checking in advance whether this route is covered by your transport insurance. Due to the current situation in the region, specific insurance conditions, additional requirements or restrictions may apply.

We are closely monitoring developments and take into account the route selected by the shipping line for your specific service. Do you have questions about the route, transit time or planning of your shipment? Please feel free to contact us. We will be happy to look into this with you.
